Lower Your Cholesterol with Lipitor

Lipitor is a prescription drug to treat high cholesterol. If you suffer from high cholesterol despite lowering your cholesterol intake, Lipitor can help return your cholesterol readings into a healthy range. This will reduce the stress on your arteries due to fat deposits and lower your risk for heart disease, heart attacks, and strokes. Studies have shown that Lipitor can help prevent heart disease in type 2 diabetics.

Speak with your doctor to determine whether or not Lipitor is right for you. The potential side effects include the deterioration of muscle tissue and in some cases, kidney failure. For this reason, you should get a hold of your doctor right away if you experience muscle pain, weakness, and a darkening of urine color while taking Lipitor, as these are signs of distress to your kidneys. Additionally, Lipitor cannot be taken during a pregnancy and can cause harm to the fetus. Lipitor is not recommended for anyone with a history of kidney or liver disease, muscle ailments, or thyroid conditions.
As your doctor will tell you, patients on Lipitor must regulate their diet to limit cholesterol intake. A high cholesterol diet will counteract the effects of Lipitor and you will not see the effective results you need. Always follow the instructions from the pharmacy and take your Lipitor dose with a big drink of water at approximately the same time each day. Depending on your needs, you may receive a temporary prescription, or your doctor will place you on Lipitor indefinitely to help regulate your cholesterol levels. Let your doctor know if you are already taking any other medications. Lipitor can cause negative effects when taken with Digoxin, E-mycin, HIV or AIDS medications, and Niacin. You should not consume alcohol while taking Lipitor.

Note that patients on Lipitor report some minor side effects, including heartburn, headaches, and congestion, a rash or itchy skin, and gas. If you experience one or more of these side effects or experience significant discomfort, talk to your doctor about alternative treatment options. Some find that eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice can help limit these side effects.
