You Really Can Enjoy Delicious Soul Food and Still Lose Weight!

Soul food and weight loss are two phrases that don’t seem to fit together. Soul food is the impossibly good, tasty foods that come from the African-American tradition of cooking - the foods that light a fire in your belly and make you feel comfortably at home, no matter where you are when you eat them. Weight loss doesn’t seem to fit into that description, does it?

But it’s entirely possible to include great soul food in your diet and still watch the pounds melt away! A man named Lindsey Williams has made it happen. The grandson of Harlem’s “queen of soul food”, Williams grew up eating the best of the best in soul food cuisine - and eventually he tipped the scales at 400 pounds! He had to find a way to make his eating habits mesh with a healthy lifestyle, so he started reworking the best of his soul food recipes. The result was a great cookbook, and losing half his body weight. If he can do it, so can you!

But how do you make soul food healthier? The answer is surprisingly simple. Avoid the concentration of starchy and refined ingredients in your soul food recipes. You can do this by avoiding white foods: White flour, white sugar, white potatoes, and all of the traditional breads that are usually associated with a good soul food meal. Instead, you can substitute the white foods with other items that cook just as well, but are much healthier for you.

One of the tricks Williams uses is in his traditional corn bread. He shaved over 100 calories a slice! He did it by cutting out the butter and sugar, using skim milk instead of whole milk, and using honey to sweeten things up. The result is a healthier dish without sacrificing any of the flavors. In fact, anywhere white sugar is required in a recipe, try using natural honey instead. You will be amazed at how much sugar you can cut out of your diet!

When you make any dish, look for low-fat variations of your usual ingredients. Instead of using regular cheese for a Macaroni and Cheese dish, choose low-fat cheeses and use a variety of them for a snazzy, unusual taste. When you’re thinking about frying something up in your favorite cast-iron skillet, don’t! Dress it up with herbs and spices and put it in the oven instead. Make use of yogurt and other good-for-you foods to add flavor to the dishes you love.

By cutting down on the bad ingredients and ramping up the good ones, you can still create delicious soul food masterpieces that tempt the taste buds and comfort your belly. You don’t have to sacrifice flavor to eat healthy, and soul food is the best example of that! If you think you can’t do it, remember the “grandson of the soul food queen” and how much weight he lost by turning those tried-and-true recipes into weight loss gold.

Soul food and weight loss. You really can have both!
